How Long Does It Take to Build a Custom Home? Full Timeline Explained

One of the most common questions we get: “How long will it take to build our custom home?” While timelines vary depending on design complexity, weather, and permitting, here’s a general breakdown of what to expect — and how Integra Builders keeps things moving.

Average Timeline: 10 to 16 Months

From your first design meeting to move-in day, most custom homes take about 10 to 16 months. Here’s a look at each phase:

1. Design & Pre-Construction: 1–3 Months

  • Architectural plans are finalized
  • Specifications are created and selections begin
  • Budget and build scope are locked in

2. Permitting & HOA Approvals: 1–2 Months

  • We submit your plans to the city/town
  • Permitting timelines vary by jurisdiction (Fishers, Westfield, Zionsville, etc.)
  • HOA review, if needed, happens here

3. Site Prep & Foundation: 1 Month

  • Clearing, excavation, and foundation pour
  • Utility prep and underground inspections

4. Framing to Dry-In: 1–2 Months

  • Framing, roofing, windows, and doors installed
  • At this point, your home is “weather-tight”

5. Mechanical Rough-Ins: 1 Month

  • HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems are installed
  • City inspections follow

6. Interior Finishes: 3–4 Months

  • Insulation, drywall, trim, cabinetry, flooring, paint, fixtures
  • We track daily progress with clear communication

7. Final Touches & Walkthrough: 1 Month

  • Final inspections, punch list items, and deep clean
  • We schedule your final walkthrough and handoff
